Tips for Beginners

Symphony in C is committed to developing new classical music audiences. So if you are a classical concert newbie we’ve assembled the following FAQ’s to acclimate you to the classical concert experience.

• What should I wear?
  We encourage you to wear what’s comfortable.
• How long will the concert last?
  Symphony in C’s performances generally last for an hour and a half to two hours with one 15 minute intermission.
• Is it appropriate to bring my children?
  Symphony in C welcomes children’s participation; however, we encourage parents to bring children to our Concerts for Young People which are specifically developed for children. Please use your discretion when bringing children to regular season performances.
• When should I arrive?
  We suggest patrons arrive 20 minutes before the concert begins. This will allow you enough time to park, pick-up or purchase tickets, use the restroom and find your seat.
• What if I arrive late?
  Patrons who arrive late will be asked to wait until an appropriate time between movements or at the end of full pieces before being seated by an usher. This is a courtesy to the musicians on stage and fellow audience members.
• When should I clap?
  It is generally considered proper concert etiquette to clap after full pieces instead of between movements. You are encouraged to look at your program book to find out how many movements are in the piece.
• Do I need to know the music before I attend the performance?
  You do not need to know the music before attending the performance; however, to enhance your listening and knowledge of the works being performed, you are encouraged to attend Soundbytes, the Symphony’s pre-concert discussion, listen to a recording, or read the program notes prior to the performance. These are optional but may give you a deeper appreciation for what you are going to hear.
• May I bring my cell phone or wireless device?
  All electronic devices must be shut off prior to the performance. These noises are a distraction to fellow audience members and the musicians on stage.
• What about coughing noises?
  Coughing noises may be unavoidable. If possible, try to wait until between movements to release your cough. We recommend bringing wax-coated cough drops if you are suffering from a scratchy throat.
• May I take pictures or record the concert?
  The taking of photographs or the recording of Symphony in C performances is strictly prohibited.
