Audition Prep Clinics
We know that many students throughout our region participate in the All-South Jersey band and orchestra festivals, so we have set up a three-part program to help students prepare more thoroughly for these auditions. Students will work with Symphony in C’s professional musicians in each clinic and may sign up for one, two, or all three sessions. We will prep for both junior high and high school auditions—students will select their current grade level on the registration form and will be grouped according to which audition they are taking this year. All sessions take place at Haddonfield United Methodist Church.
Session 1: Monday, October 9, 2023
This session will include:
- Fundamentals: Warm-up techniques, intonation exercises, and tone production
- Scales and arpeggios: All-South Jersey scale requirements for each instrument
- Learning the solo: An in-depth look at the required solo pieces for the All-South Jersey auditions
- Panel discussion/Q&A — sight-reading: How to approach sight-reading in the audition and how to practice beforehand
Session 2: Monday, November 6, 2023
This session will include:
- Warm-up drill: Extensive time on scales, arpeggios, and sight-reading practice
- Performance hour: Students perform sections of their required solo and receive constructive feedback from Symphony in C teachers
- Panel discussion/Q&A — practicing for success: Tips and strategies to optimize practice routines
Session 3: Monday, December 4, 2023
This session will include:
- Mock audition: Students perform a mock audition for a panel of professional musicians, followed by comments and suggestions
- Panel discussion/Q&A — performance preparation: How to approach audition day, what to bring, strategies for performance anxiety, and more
Price: $75 per session, or $200 for all three clinics if paid in full at the time of registration.
Youth Orchestra discount: Students enrolled in the 2023–24 Symphony in C Youth Orchestra qualify for a 20% discount on these sessions.
Registration deadline: October 1, 2023
Please bring your instrument, a pencil, and a copy of the required All-South Jersey audition piece for your instrument/grade level.
