Symphony In C Announces Its Season of Guest Conductors for 2022-23
COLLINGSWOOD, NJ – The nationally-recognized Symphony in C announces its Season of Guest Conductors for 2022-23. Each of five symphonic concerts will be led by a talented young conductor who is at the beginning of their career. Originally scheduled for the 2020-21 season and postponed by the pandemic, Symphony in C has selected five finalists for the position of Music Director, which has remained unfilled since 2020. Each will bring his or her own personality and perspective to the podium. The season concerts reflect this diversity with wide-ranging repertoire and exciting soloists. The five finalists are Jacob Joyce, Joshua Hong, Noam Aviel, Ankush Kumar Bahl, and Joseph Young.
Symphony in C also presents the Virtuosi Series, three chamber concerts on Sunday afternoons at Haddonfield United Methodist Church. On October 8, 2022, Symphony in C, co-conducted by Kenneth Bean and Paul Bryan will perform at Macy’s Philadelphia in a concert with Peter Richard Conte on the famous Wanamaker Organ. The concert is presented by The Friends of the Wanamaker Organ.
Tickets for all concerts are on sale now at SymphonyinC.org.
Symphony in C’s symphonic series at the Gordon Theater, Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts opens on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. The concert opens with the lovely Ballade in A minor by Afro-British composer, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Next, 19 year old pianist, Maxim Lando will perform Tchaikovsky’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor - one of the most popular works in the classical repertoire and a favorite of concert pianists around the world. Rounding out the evening is Carl Nielsen’s dramatic Symphony No, 4, Op. 29 "The Inextinguishable." Guest Conductor Jacob Joyce will lead the orchestra in this thrilling concert.
On Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 8:00 p.m., Guest conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl opens the program with Entr’acte by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw. The piece was written in 2011 and inspired by Haydn’s string quartet Op. 77. The composer wrote that it is “structured like a minuet and trio, riffing on that classical form but suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition.” Symphony in C welcomes the return of former Principal Trumpet and member of the world-renowned Canadian Brass, Caleb Hudson who performs the iconic Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. The concert concludes with one of Beethoven’s most famous works, the Symphony No. 3 in E♭ major, Op. 55, “Eroica”.
Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. Symphony in C concludes the 2022-23 Season with guest conductor Joseph Young. The concert opens with Antonin Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds, Op. 44, B.77, D Minor. The Serenade evokes the lighter, delicate style of the Rococo period. Dvôrák’s influence can be heard in the Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, by Florence Price, the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Soloist TBA. Mendelssohn’s evocative Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, “Italian,” brings the composer’s musical memories of the color and atmosphere of 1830 Italy to us today, as fresh and alive as it was then.
Tickets for the Symphonic Series at Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts and the Virtuosi Series are currently available and range in price from $25 - $52. All tickets may be purchased online at www.SymphonyinC.org or by calling 856-963-6683.
